The 80s is back! Stylish nails in electric blue, metallic silver/gold and vivacious yellow have returned. This time with a 21st century twist.
The once long, tacky acrylic nails from the 80s have been replaced with shorter more natural looking nails.
Chic prints in hounds tooth, zebra stripes, black/white checkerboards or even a picture of the president are the refurbished designs that can be seen on the fingertips of celebrities such as Rihanna, Beyonce and Lady Gaga to name a few.
These fun prints, which look like detailed free-hand designs, are mere adhesive stickers placed over the nail called Minx.
Szcznie Williams, manager at The Nail Bar located on Thomasville Road, says Minx is simply an alternative to nail polish, “except it offers more designs.”
Minx is a polymer strip that doesn’t involve any chemicals or drilling. These strips are pre-designed.
To apply a Minx the adhesive sticker is heated and applied to the nail, once it cools the access edges are cut off. Within 40 minutes the customer has a full set of finished glamorous nails.
Williams says the media plays a huge role in the increasing popularity of Minx nails.
“Minx is becoming popular particularly with the younger generation because of what they see on television, in music videos and on celebrities,” Williams says.
Suhailah Rivera, a styling intern at Jean Paul Gaultier, says she is easily influenced by what goes on in the fashion industry, and has too fallen victim to trying styles she sees on celebrities.
“When I first saw Beyonce wearing a Minx, I knew I had to try them,” Rivera says.
Although most students at FAMU have not tried Minx yet, Minx-inspired nail art has become widespread around campus.
It’s possible to see the girl standing next to you in the financial aid office with solid pink nails accompanied by an assortment of dots or stripes on every other nail. Or maybe your classmate who shows four brightly colored nails with the exception of one contrasting white nail in the middle, while raising her hand to answer a question.
Brandon Nguyen, manager of Nail Bar located on Apalachee Pkwy, says people like the fact that Minx is different, however, they don’t paying more and short-lived neatness.
A full set of Minx nails cost anywhere from $45-$50 and can last up to two weeks with careful maintenance (but for most, about five days is the reality).
Nguyen says Minx tends to last longer on feet, typically for about two weeks.
In managing a Minx set, heat is the key. If the edges began to peel up, heat can be applied to seal them back into place. Hot water is also used in removing them.
Rivera says she wore Minx about seven times, and it’s more so for special occasions because it doesn’t last very long.
“The designs are definitely addicting,” Rivera says.
For those fashionistas interested in trying these flirty flashes of metallic nail candy, there are three salons in Tallahassee that provide Minx designs.

In this case the negative aspect is the price. Christian Louboutin shoes come with obnoxiously high price tags. Therefore, most women cannot afford a pair of them.
