Library Advisory Board met to discuss new additions

On Tuesday, the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library Advisory Board met for it’s weekly meeting updating the community on what is coming up, and held a new member orientation.

The meeting was called at 10 a.m. by chairwoman Carole Fiore who began with the induction of the new member orientation.

New member  Erik Robinson, who was appointed by Commissioner John Dailey, was inducted as well as Gale Workman who was appointed by Commissioner Mary Ann Lindsey.

“It was a very good introduction to the board and what they are going to be doing. There are contributions being made to our community by this group and I am ready to make some contributions of my own,” Erik Robinson said.

Gale Workman after working for Florida A&M University for 26 years, traveling to 90 countries in seven continents decided to become a member of the board and was inducted next.

Friends of the Library raise money to fund the library events for purchases that aren’t funded by the county.

Vice Chair of the advisory board and president of the Friends of the library group, Marcia Labat discussed membership participation and how important it is to have long-term members.

“We are looking for board members of committed young adults who want to come help raise those funds for the library,” Labat said.

In new business, secretary Cay Hohmeister went over upcoming events and highlighted a new event that will be added annually.

The Harry Potter Book Night event will now be held the first Thursday in every month of the year where kids are all welcome to come enjoy a night of Harry Potter.

The children will have a chance to create a profile, draw pictures of their favorite beast, participate in a scavenger hunt, decorate masks, and hear a book read of one of Harry Potter’s classics.

With Black History month full in effect, The African American Read-In is an annual event celebrating African American authors and their books.

The annual Read-In will be this Sunday, February 11, 2018, from 2-4 P.M. in the main library program rooms at 200 West Park Avenue.

This year will involve conversations and readings about African American books, including a children’s story time corner.

“If you love to read and love the library and any aspect of literary we’ve got a place for you,” Vice Chair Marcia Labat said.
