By: Calaydria Callins
Restaurants, bars, theaters, and other outlets of entertainment have closed to eliminate the exposure of the coronavirus. With this going on more people are looking for other ways to entertain themselves during this time of social distancing. What else is better than lounging at home and binge-watching TV?
All streaming services, such as Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Go, and Amazon Prime, have been adding new content to keep up with the demand. Competing against each other to keep up their viewers, these services have released a host of shows, docuseries, and movies. Here are Journey Magazine’s top selections of shows to tune into during quarantine.
1. Tiger King
On March 20, 2020, Netflix released “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness”, an American true-crime documentary miniseries covering the life of zookeeper Joe Exotic. Based out of Oklahoma, the docuseries reached approximately 34 million viewers in the first 10 days, according to Nielsen’s ratings database. Twitter was flooded with millions of tweets the first day it aired and the documentary soon reached virality. Everyone raved over the fan-favorite Joseph Allen Maldonado, better known as Joe Exotic, who graced the screen as the main antihero. Maldonado is the former owner and operator of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park in Wynnewood, Oklahoma but currently, he claims to be the guy who simply breeds tigers throughout the United States. With animal exploitation and murder suspects in question, if you like watching a suspenseful drama, this is the show for you.
2. Ozark
Are you a fan of money-laundering shows?
This drama series “Ozark” has been around since 2017, but it didn’t gain traction until Netflix placed Season 3 on the account on March 27. Social media has definitely played a major influence in this show because no one was raving about it three years ago, but here we are. Jason Bateman plays the main character Marty Byrd, a financial planner who relocates his family to get away from his problems. In a scheme gone wrong, Marty is now forced to pay off a debt from a Mexican drug lord. Viewers expressed the slow unraveling of the plot, but others say they loved the show after they got past the third episode.
In an exclusive interview with Gold Derby, Bateman explains why he loves playing his character.
“Playing a normal person who is in the middle of something that is pretty abnormal, this material made me happy because it was so ‘dark’ and ‘moody,’” Bateman explains. “It made me stretched right to the edges of what I thought I could handle, and thankfully we pulled it together.”
3. Money Heist
Did you ever think you would be hooked on a Spanish drama series? Money Heist is a Spanish based show that has everyone going crazy over. Once you get past the fact that it is a Spanish based show that comes with subtitles, you will love it. The plot involves a legendary mastermind, known as The Professor, who has a plan to pull off the biggest heist in history and print billions of euros in the Royal Mint of Spain. The Professor finds a group of people who have done crime themselves and put them all together so they pull off the master plan. Filled with suspense on whether or not they will escape, head over to Netflix to watch seasons 1-4 that are now available to you.
