Happy 40th Birthday Journey Magazine
By: Tatyanna Mccray | Staff Writer
Fashion, the arts, celebrities, politics, campus news and student-run, Journey magazine has reached a new milestone. This year commemorates the 40th anniversary of Journey magazine, and upon reflection, the trajectory of growth continues to steadily rise. This year’s issue is titled “Dreamer’s Edition,” exploring dreams, goals and the things we wish to accomplish and sharing personal truths in hopes of inspiring readers.
Humble Beginnings
Journey magazine traces its roots back to 1984, emerging just shy of a decade after the first class of journalism graduates in 1976. Florida A&M University’s journalism program was founded by the late Thelma Thurston, a former professor. Since then, the program has continued to soar. Journey magazine has become an award-winning publication featuring timeless articles and graphics that aim to capture the essence of black journalists. The publication has created a nurturing environment for future communications professionals, aiding in writing skills, creativity and leadership.
Several students have expressed their eagerness to see Journey tackle a wider range of subjects. This year, Journey aimed to meet these requests. The current stories featured on the magazine’s webpage cover various topics ranging from music, celebrity news, fashion, politics and more.
Together We Rise
Falling off? Never that! Journey continues to reinvent itself by creating new trends and aiming for greater heights. In recent years, Journey faced challenges that raised speculation about its future. The impact of COVID-19 disrupted operations significantly, with most of the student body forced into prolonged periods of quarantine. However, as Journey celebrates its 40th anniversary, a new chapter unfolds, signaling fresh beginnings.
First year criminal justice student Danielle Parker said, “Although I was not aware of Journey, I would like to read things that are helpful for students that include tips, life advice and of course the latest celebrity gossip.”
As Journey continues to grow and adapt to evolving times, its staff remains committed to promoting the student ran publication. On campus, there is a diverse audience, with some who are well-acquainted with Journey magazine and others who are yet to discover it.
Influential Experiences
Social media serves as a prominent platform for students, alumni and the community to connect and share news pertaining to student life, Tallahassee and beyond. Journey’s Instagram page is filled with promotions for small businesses, musical and artistic talents, fashion and events related to the student body. Journey’s main website is full of articles written regularly by staff writers, inviting students to stay up to date on the latest.
Some students feel that there’s room for improvement in drawing in a larger crowd.
Industrial engineering student Janae Irving said, “I’ve heard about [Journey] in passing, but I think it’ll be better if there were an app for students to get updates and leave comments [on articles posted].”
Considering that a lot of interaction gained by the student body is through social events and social media, the idea itself seems promising.
Despite its humble beginnings, Journey has continued to excel. FAMU’s former President Walter L. Smith spoke life into the program, declaring it would go on to become one of the best in the nation. The declaration has upheld the test of time, as many students have received recognition for their creativity and storytelling skills.
