From Near Abortion to Pro-Life Champion: Christina Bennett’s Journey
By: Charrise Lane
For Christina Bennett, abortion is not just a political debate but a deeply personal journey. Born in New Britain, Connecticut, Bennett experienced a chaotic childhood as she navigated life in a blended family, frequently moving between the homes of her divorced parents. Abortion was never discussed in her household, church, or among friends, so she didn’t form strong opinions about it until later in her adult life.
While in college, Bennett experienced a revelation that would change the course of her life and ignite her passion for anti-abortion advocacy. While visiting a church, Bennett encountered a pivotal moment when someone approached her and said, “God wants you to know something remarkable that happened around the time of your birth.” Intrigued, she later confronted her mother, who revealed a shocking truth: her mother had once scheduled an abortion for her.
Statistics on Abortion in the U.S
According to the CDC’s 2021 report, 625,978 legal abortions were recorded in the United States, equating to 11.6 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15-44. Among the 33 states reporting race and ethnicity data, non-Hispanic Black women represented the largest proportion at 41.5%, followed by non-Hispanic White women at 30.2%.
A Mysterious Encounter in the Hospital
While waiting for an abortion, Bennett’s mother encountered a mysterious elderly woman, a janitor, who would unexpectedly change the course of her decision.
The janitor lifted her chin and asked, “Do you want to have this baby?”
“Yes,” her mother said.
The janitor encouraged her to leave, disappearing moments later. This encounter, along with her mother’s shock at the sight of blood left from a previous abortion, ultimately led her to cancel the procedure and walk away.
Bennett’s Anti-Abortion Advocacy
This story ignited Bennett’s passion for being anti-abortion, as she realized her very existence was nearly taken away. Since then, she has become vocal, traveling across the nation to share her testimony and encouraging others. For Bennett, her stance means more than just opposing abortion, it means supporting mothers.
“The only way you can save a baby is by reaching the heart of the mom,” Bennet said.
Bennett has walked the talk, working at a women’s center and other non profits, and adopting a son with her husband, Sean Bennett. She remains a call away for women who need help and support, proving that her activism extends beyond social media.
Support from Loved Ones
Will Ford, a close friend of Bennett for over 20 years, had nothing but praise for her.
“What I admire most about Christina is the fact that she leaves no stone unturned,” Ford said. “She says things at face value, whether others agree or not. She digs deep and she’s a truth seeker. She’s a truth teller and she’s fair.”
He described Bennett as a Woman who holds strong moral values and a Woman of great character.
Sean Bennett, her husband of over 12 years, was initially surprised by her invitation to pray outside an abortion clinic when they first met. This inspired him to question his stance on abortion.
While being interviewed, he described her as “unashamed” in her stances. He also said he “admired her unapologetic stance in this issue.” Along with the stance of Ford, Sean has described his wife as a woman with strong and inspiring values.
For over 20 years, Bennett has been steadfast in her mission, despite standing alone at times in her personal circle. She envisions a future where the movement is more diverse, with Black women leading organizations and men stepping up to voice their beliefs. She also hopes to see more healing and unity in this space. Bennett hopes to mentor more black women, complete her book, and raise more children with her husband.
