The 67th annual Grammys happened on Feb. 2, and it was a night full of excitement, entertainment, and record-breaking wins.
Hollywood’s biggest stars filled the Crypto.com arena in Los Angeles for the event. Comedian Trevor Noah hosted the show. The event also raised money for those who lost their homes in the Los Angeles fires. About 7 million dollars was raised throughout the night to help those affected.
Black artists swept the 67th Grammys and made history with their wins. Kendrick Lamar won five Grammys for his song “Not Like Us” in Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance and Best Music Video. Lamar is the second rap artist to win the Record of the Year award, along with “This is America” by Childish Gambino.

Beyonce won three awards, including Best Country Album and Album of the Year for Cowboy Carter and Best Country Duo/Group Performance for II Most Wanted with Miley Cyrus. This is Beyonce’s first time winning album of the year, and she is the first black woman to win the award in the 21st century. She joins Lauryn Hill as the only black woman to win the top prize. Beyonce also made history as the first black woman to win Best Country Album and the first black woman to win a Country Grammy in 50 years.
Doechii also won best rap album for Alligator Bites Never Heal. Her win makes her the 3rd black woman ever to win the award, along with Lauryn Hill and Cardi B. Doechii, who gave a heartfelt and powerful speech about the win, mentioned the historic feat, and delivered an inspiring message to black girls watching the event.
“This category was introduced in 1989, and two women have won,” she said, then corrected herself. “Three women have won! Lauryn Hill, Cardi B, and Doechii!”

2024 pop princesses Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX won their first Grammys tonight. Roan won an award for Best New Artist, beating out her pop counterparts and other breakout artists nominated. Carpenter won the prize for best pop solo performance in the premier ceremony and won for best pop vocal album.
Charli XCX won three awards at the Grammys: Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Recording Package for Brat. The artist also won Best Pop Dance Recording for her hit single “Von Dutch.” This was the first time the British singer had been nominated for an award in 10 years, her last being for her song Fancy with Iggy Azalea.
The Weeknd made a surprise appearance and performance at the awards show after a speech from Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. The artist had been boycotting the award show since 2021 and called them out for being “corrupt.” In the speech, Mason discussed steps the award show has taken to diversify their voting body and appeal to younger audiences.
“What we all want is an organization dedicated to the well-being of all music makers,” Mason said in his speech. “And one that reflects the entire music community, for now and for future generations. So, over the past few years, we’ve listened. We’ve acted. And we‘ve changed.”
The Los Angeles Fire Department was also commemorated at the event for their dedication to putting out the Palisades fires that ravaged the city last month. The crowd gave the department a standing ovation for their work. LAFD fire chief Anthony Marrone delivered an inspiring message to the crowd about the tragedy and thanked first responders.

“Our heartfelt condolences and prayers remain with all the families who have lost loved ones, friends, and neighbors, along with everyone who has lost homes, businesses and been displaced,” Marrone said. “We are thankful to our many community partners, including all of you, for standing alongside our residents and communities to offer continued support. I am confident that we will recover and rebuild together because we are L.A. strong.”
The event concluded with the LAFD presenting the Album of the Year award for Beyonce for Cowboy Carter.
