Vybz Kartel’s Return Ignites Cultural Buzz Among FAMU Students

“Kartel is more than an artist. He’s a monument.” — Alleyah Ainsworth

After over a decade of anticipation, the long-reigning King of Dancehall, Vybz Kartel, is set to grace a U.S. stage for the first time in 13 years. His historic performance, slated for April 11 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, has stirred excitement across the Caribbean diaspora, and nowhere is that buzz louder than on the campus of Florida A&M University (FAMU).

Kartel, born Adidja Azim Palmer, was released from prison in July 2024 after serving time on a murder conviction that was later overturned. Since his release, the artist has been reclaiming his throne in the music industry, starting with a massive comeback concert in Jamaica on December 31, 2024, at the aptly titled Freedom Street event. His upcoming U.S. performance is the next chapter in a powerful story of resilience and cultural pride.

A Global Stage for Dancehall Royalty

“People don’t even need to hear him perform; they just want to see him,” Alleyah Ainsworth, a FAMU MBA candidate born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, said.

Tickets for the concert go on sale Thursday, March 6 at 10 a.m. ET, with prices ranging from $600 to $1,700 before taxes. Despite the hefty cost, the cultural value of this performance is immeasurable for many.

“I won’t be attending because the price is out of my budget, I think it’s a unifying moment for Caribbean and Black communities. In the midst of political and social challenges, this is a chance to celebrate and reconnect through music.” Ayshja Graham, a senior healthcare management student, said.

Dancehall’s Influence and Evolution

Kartel’s impact extends beyond Jamaica’s shores. He has influenced generations with his lyrical mastery and bold persona, helping shape global perceptions of dancehall music. His influence even crosses into the American mainstream, with elements of his style sampled by international artists.

Austin Thompson, CEO of New Wave Label and owner of Tastees Bar and Grill, described Kartel as a game-changer. “There’s not another lyricist like him. Not in Jamaica, not in the U.S., nobody touches Kartel lyrically,” Thompson said. “His return brings a surge of energy to dancehall that’s been missing. It’s a blessing to have him back.”

While some argue that Kartel’s history is controversial, many believe his artistry speaks volumes and that he’s evolving. “He knows the business now,” Thompson said. “He’s older, wiser and still setting the standard.”

Bridging Cultures Through Music

For FAMU’s Caribbean students, Kartel’s performance is more than a concert, it’s a cultural affirmation.

“It’s important for artists from diverse backgrounds to perform on global stages like Barclays,” Ainsworth said. “Even if Kartel isn’t the perfect representative of Jamaica, his presence shows the world our culture matters.”

The performance also offers a gateway for non-Caribbean audiences to experience dancehall music firsthand.

“Most Americans may not be familiar with Kartel unless introduced by a friend or relative,” Graham said. “But this concert could open new doors and expand appreciation for dancehall and Caribbean music.”

Accessibility and Representation

Still, the price of admission has raised concerns about access. Students and longtime fans worry that the high costs may limit participation to wealthier attendees, excluding the grassroots supporters who helped shape Kartel’s rise.

“I understand the pricing,” Thompson said. “Streaming has hurt music sales, so artists rely on shows to make money. But it’s tough when the people who supported you from day one can’t afford to see you.”

Despite the challenges, Kartel’s performance is expected to be a monumental celebration of Caribbean culture. Whether on stage or in spirit, his return symbolizes endurance, identity, and the evolving reach of dancehall.

As Kartel steps onto an American stage once again, his message is loud and clear: Dancehall is not only alive, it’s global.
