FAMU Gospel Choir Return to Lee Hall After Eight Year Hiatus

After an eight-year hiatus, the Florida A&M University (FAMU) Gospel Choir is set to make a triumphant return to Lee Hall Auditorium for its highly anticipated Spring Concert on Monday, April 21, at 6 p.m. This historic event marks the revival of a legacy that has shaped the cultural and spiritual fabric of FAMU for nearly seven decades. 

A Legacy of Excellence 

Founded in 1957 by Jona’ D. Olds, the FAMU Gospel Choir holds the distinction of being the first collegiate gospel choir in the United States. Born out of a desire to bring gospel music into academic spaces, the choir overcame initial resistance to become a beacon of faith and artistry. Over the decades, it has performed alongside gospel legends such as Kirk Franklin and Shirley Caesar, earning national recognition and three Stellar Award nominations. Choir director Malachi Gibbs reflected on this legacy. 

“We’re not just a choir; we are a movement—a representation of faith, resilience, and Black excellence Gibbs said. This performance is about honoring our history while inspiring future generations.” 

The Return to Lee Hall 

Lee Hall Auditorium has long been a cornerstone of FAMU’s cultural life, serving as a venue for iconic performances that resonate with students and alumni alike. Gospel artist Twinkie Clark recorded her 1996 album, “Twinkie Clark-Terrell Presents the Florida A&M University Gospel Choir”, in this auditorium, earning a Top 10 spot on the Billboard Gospel Albums chart. For the FAMU Gospel Choir, returning to this historic stage is more than just a performance—it’s a homecoming. 

“This stage carries so much history—not just for FGC but for FAMU as a whole,” Daryl Wymes said, an alumnus and current advisor to the choir. “To witness this return now is a full-circle moment. It reaffirms that the choir’s legacy is still thriving.” 

The Spring Concert will feature a dynamic blend of traditional and contemporary gospel music, showcasing both the choir’s deep roots and its evolution over time. Gibbs described it as “a spirit-filled experience that will uplift and inspire everyone in attendance.” 

Shaping Lives Through Music 

The impact of the FAMU Gospel Choir extends far beyond its performances. For members past and present, it serves as both a spiritual sanctuary and a platform for personal growth. 

“FGC shaped me in so many ways—not just musically but professionally and spiritually,” Wymes shared during an interview. “Serving in multiple e-board positions taught me leadership, teamwork, and resilience—skills that I’ve carried into my career.” 

John Harris, head advisor for the choir, emphasized its role in fostering both spiritual and musical development. 

“The choir plays a pivotal role in shaping students’ lives. Beyond rehearsals, members engage in Bible studies, musical labs, and sectional practices—moments that help them grow as artists while strengthening their faith.” 

This dual focus on artistry and ministry has made the FAMU Gospel Choir an integral part of campus life, providing students with mentorship opportunities and creating lasting bonds among its members. 

A Community Celebration 

The return of the FAMU Gospel Choir to Lee Hall is not just an event—it’s an invitation for the entire FAMU community to celebrate a legacy that has inspired generations. The concert promises to be more than an evening of music; it will be an experience of encouragement, inspiration, and renewal. 

“For those in attendance, this will be about more than just songs,” Harris noted. “It will be about reconnecting with God through music while celebrating our shared history.” 

As alumni prepare to gather for this historic occasion, emotions are running high. “There will be tears, shouts of praise, and overwhelming joy,” Wymes said. “This return to Lee Hall symbolizes resilience—not just for our choir but for our community.”

As the choir prepares to take the stage once again, it stands as a testament to perseverance and excellence—a reminder that its mission transcends time. Gibbs expressed his hope for what lies ahead. 

“Our impact extends far beyond campus; we’ve influenced gospel music nationwide and touched countless lives. By returning to Lee Hall, we honor our past while continuing our mission to inspire change through music.”
