Brotherhood in every step: Three FAMU Escorts build a lasting bond

Zaria Slaughter

At Florida A&M University, the Escorts are more than the guys you see beside the Royal Court. They bring presence. They bring style. And this year, that presence comes from three young men whose friendship is just as sharp as their suits: Chandler Swann, Jaelin Sistrunk and Mr. FAMU Miles Howard.

Their journey didn’t start on a stage; it started their freshman year, long before the tailored suits, the crowns, or the spotlight.

“I met Miles hooping my freshman year,” Jaelin said with a laugh. “He wasn’t too good at basketball, I won’t lie. But he was cool, and we just clicked from there.”

Miles didn’t argue. “I really wasn’t good,” he said. “But that’s how me and Jaelin got close. We were outside every day, just talking, joking and trying to figure out college.”

The third piece of the puzzle, Chandler, joined the group later during the housing step show.

“We really all met around the same time,” Chandler said. “The housing step show was the first time we talked for real. After that, we kept seeing each other around, and then Rampage pulled us together like brothers.”

Rampage Step Team didn’t just make them teammates; it made them family. The long practices, the tired nights, the inside jokes, the pressure, all of it helped their friendship grow without them even noticing.

“That’s when it switched,” Miles said. “It wasn’t just friends anymore. We were really looking out for each other, eating together, studying together, and talking about life. That’s  brotherhood.”

Before they knew it, they were living together. Becoming roommates made everything tighter: early mornings, long nights, planning, responsibilities, and the unspoken support that comes from sharing the same space.

What most people on campus notice first, though, is the style. From the suits to the jewelry, from grooming to shoe choices, nothing is thrown together. Every look has a plan.

“A lot of people think we pick our outfits the day of,” Chandler said. “But every look gets planned. Our advisors help us come up with concepts before we step out, so everything is clean and in sync.”

Jaelin added, “We wanna look sharp because it represents FAMU. It’s not just clothes. It’s how we show up.”

Miles sees it as something even bigger. “People look up to us,” he said. “So we move with intention. How we talk, how we walk, how we present ourselves, it all matters.”

But what stands out most isn’t the suits. It’s the connection. The way they stand together. The jokes. The focus. The silent support. The sense that they’re all pushing each other to be better, even when nobody else is watching.

“It’s bigger than the role,” Chandler said. “This is who we are now.”

Three students. One university. And a brotherhood that shows every time they take a step.
