47th student senate: recognizes domestic violence

The Senate chambers were decorated Purple and white this week in support of Domestic Violence Awareness. There was food and drinks for the gallery to enjoy. Most of the senators had on a purple ribbon which signifies awareness for domestic violence.

When people think of domestic abuse, they often focus on domestic violence. But domestic abuse occurs whenever one person in an intimate relationship or marriage tries to dominate and control the other person. Domestic violence and abuse are used for one purpose and one purpose only, to gain and maintain total control over you.

Domestic violence and abuse do not discriminate. Abuse happens among heterosexual couples and in same-sex partnerships. It occurs within all age ranges, ethnic backgrounds, and economic levels.

Senate president Rakeem Ford said, “I think it’s amazing that everyone has took part in this because there is no age limit, gender specification, or prejudice on a person who can experience domestic violence. Bring awareness to the situation and letting people know that there is someone out there who cares is a person may need sometimes that will give the courage to speak up.”

For Black women, it’s an even bigger problem. Black women are almost three times as likely to experience death as a result of domestic abuse. For Black women, a strong sense of cultural affinity and loyalty to community and race renders many of them silent, so most of their stories often go untold. No one should ever have to endure this if you are experiencing any type of abuse, speak up and tell someone there are people out here that cares. You are not alone.

During committee reports senator Jaelen Jackson mentioned that the Student Relations Committee is holding Black Out Week February 25-March 2nd 2018.

“We are striking out racism and I’m glad to be a part of it., said Britney Coleman junior Psychology major.

While planning these events the committee enjoyed conversations where they would discuss the things going on in today’s society and one of the biggest related impediments is our hesitation in trusting the police or the justice system.

“ I love my role, it provides a platform to enhance student life and build relationships with everyday students. The Student Relations Committee has more of an impact on campus life that you could imagine and that is the greatest gift as a student leader. When I signed up to be a Student Senator I wanted to be an asset and provide value adds to the University and student life and that’s what we’re doing everyday.” Said Jaelen Jackson senator and chair of student Relations Committee.
