A Legacy of Motivation: The Story of Nia Mason and HBCU Motivation Inc.
By: Jayla Royal

Nia Mason’s journey is a testament to the power of giving back before receiving. As a Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) student majoring in actuarial science, she understands firsthand the struggles many students face when it comes to affording their education. Originally from Durham, North Carolina, Nia’s personal experiences with financial obstacles fueled her passion to create opportunities for others.
Before she even received a scholarship herself, she was already giving them out. That simple act of selflessness became the foundation of HBCU Motivation Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to uplifting HBCU students through scholarships, mentorship and motivation.
A Mission Rooted in Experience
For Nia, the journey began with a realization: talented, hardworking students often struggle—not because they lack ability, but because they lack financial support. Instead of waiting for change, she decided to be the change.
“I didn’t receive a scholarship until after I had already started giving out my own,” Nia recalls. “That experience showed me how many students like me needed financial assistance, and I wanted to create opportunities for others who deserve the same chance to thrive.”
Thus, HBCU Motivation Inc. was born, built on the mission to provide scholarships, mentorship and inspiration to students, ensuring they have the resources and support to succeed.
The Motivate Scholarship: Investing in Future Leaders
One of the organization’s most impactful programs is the Motivate Scholarship, awarded to students who exemplify leadership, resilience and commitment to their education. Through a competitive selection process, students share their stories, aspirations and how they plan to give back to their communities.
The impact has been undeniable. Recipients have used the funds to cover tuition, books and essential supplies, helping them stay on track academically without financial stress.
Beyond Scholarships: Building a Community of Inspiration
Understanding that motivation and mentorship are just as critical as financial aid, Nia introduced initiatives like the annual Vision Board event.
“This event fosters a sense of motivation, direction, and community support,” she explains. “It’s not just about setting goals—it’s about creating a mindset that pushes students to achieve their dreams despite obstacles.”
Overcoming Challenges & Expanding the Vision
Building a nonprofit as a full-time student has not been easy. One of Nia’s biggest challenges has been securing consistent funding to expand the organization’s impact. However, her passion and commitment have pushed her forward, allowing HBCU Motivation Inc. to thrive.
One of her most exciting upcoming projects is the launch of a fundraising gala for HBCU students, featuring dinner and panel discussions with successful graduates. In addition, she dreams of starting her own show to highlight HBCU graduates and undergraduate students making a difference in their communities.
A Journey of Growth & Purpose
Leading HBCU Motivation Inc. has transformed Nia in ways she never imagined. Her leadership skills have strengthened, opportunities have opened and her passion for service and education has deepened. But if there’s one piece of advice, she wants to share with others looking to make an impact, it’s this:
“Just do it! Be original, and make sure you have a genuine passion for what you’re doing. Passion and authenticity will carry you through the challenges, and when your mission aligns with your heart, the impact you create will be truly meaningful.”
For Nia Mason, HBCU Motivation Inc. isn’t just an organization—it’s a movement. A testament to the power of service, resilience and belief in others. As she continues to grow as a scholar and leader at FAMU, her legacy of motivation will inspire generations to come—one scholarship, one student and one dream at a time.
