Behind the Scenes of FAMU Football: The Unsung Heroes Keeping the Team Running

When fans pack Bragg Memorial Stadium or tune in to watch Florida A&M University football, all eyes are on the players and coaches. But behind every thrilling touchdown and crucial defensive stop is a dedicated team working tirelessly to ensure everything runs smoothly. The equipment staff and support personnel are the backbone of the program, handling everything from uniforms and gear to game-day logistics. Their hard work often goes unnoticed, but without them, the team wouldn’t function. 

The Daily Grind: More Than Just Jerseys and Helmets 

For the equipment staff, football is a year-round commitment. From the early morning practices to late-night equipment checks, their job never truly ends. Patrick Whyte, assistant director of equipment, describes the role as a mix of problem-solving and preparation. 

“People think it’s just handing out gear, but it’s much more than that,” Whyte said. “We ensure the players have everything they need to perform at their best—cleats, pads, helmets, gloves—you name it.” 

Each week, the team has to ensure that all player uniforms are cleaned, repaired, and packed for travel. The logistics become even more complex for away games, where they must transport hundreds of pounds of gear efficiently and securely. 

Game Day: Organized Chaos 

On game days, the equipment staff is among the first to arrive and the last to leave. Hours before kickoff, they are setting up the locker room, checking communication systems, and making sure every player has what they need. Henry Burris, FAMU’s offensive coordinator, recognizes the significance of their role. 

“These guys are like the unsung quarterbacks of the operation,” Burris said. “If something goes wrong, they fix it immediately. If a player’s helmet breaks, they have a replacement ready in seconds.” 

Once the game begins, the staff remains on high alert. A broken chin strap, missing mouthpiece, or torn jersey could impact a player’s ability to perform. Their ability to react quickly keeps the team focused on the game rather than distractions. 

The Brotherhood: Camaraderie Beyond the Field 

Despite the long hours and intense workload, the equipment staff shares a strong bond with the players and coaches. Nay’Ron Jenkins, a linebacker for the Rattlers, acknowledges their importance. 

“They’re part of the team, no doubt,” Jenkins said. “They do whatever it takes to make sure we’re ready. We appreciate them more than they know.” 

Many equipment managers start as students, working their way up in the program. Their experience gives them a unique behind-the-scenes perspective on the inner workings of a Division I football program. For some, it even serves as a steppingstone to careers in sports management or coaching. 

Beyond the Field: The Challenges They Face 

While the job has its rewards, it’s not without challenges. Budget constraints, last-minute emergencies, and unpredictable weather can make each week an adventure. The equipment team often works behind the scenes to repair, replace, or improvise solutions to unexpected problems. 

“One time, a shipment of cleats didn’t arrive on time before a big game,” Whyte said. “We had to scramble to find backups, and no one in the stands even knew there was an issue. That’s part of the job.” 

Recognizing the Unsung Heroes 

While the players and coaches receive most of the spotlight, FAMU football would not function without its support staff. Their dedication ensures that every practice, road trip, and game day runs as smoothly as possible.
