Hope Over Abortion: Let Them Live Organization Funds Mothers in Crisis

Faced with financial hardships nationwide, many pregnant women often feel as if abortion is their only option. Let Them Live, a nonprofit organization, is working to change that. Through crowdfunding, the organization offers financial support, demonstrating care not just in words, but through action.

Founded by Nathan and Emily Bering in December 2018, the couple was only a few months into their marriage when inspiration struck. One night, Mr. Bering came across a post in a Facebook group from a cousin of a woman considering an abortion. The cousin was seeking advice on how to help.

This prompted Mr. Bering to reach out to the woman directly and ask why she felt abortion was her only choice. She shared that she had been evicted, recently lost her job, and was living in her car. Feeling hopeless, she saw no other way out.

After a series of conversations, Mr. Bering turned to his wife.

“If we can help her financially, she’ll cancel her abortion,” he told Mrs. Bering. When she asked where the money would come from, he proposed that they empty their bank account.

The couple decided to donate the entirety of their wedding money—about $1,200—to help the woman. That act of compassion was the beginning of Let Them Live.

Pregnant Women and Nationwide Financial Hardships

A five-year survey of women who had at least one abortion found that financial reasons were a leading factor. The survey included 954 women across 30 abortion facilities nationwide, and 40% cited finances as their reason for terminating their pregnancy.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, in 2014, 49% of women who had abortions lived below the federal poverty level. An additional 26% had incomes between 100% and 199% of the poverty line. This means that 75% of women who had abortions that year were experiencing economic instability.

A Mother’s Testimony

Diamond Jones, a mother and Let Them Live Mom Advocate, has been supported by the organization since discovering she was pregnant in May 2020.

“I had just moved back to Daytona after going to school in South Florida. I was working until it was time to go back to graduate school. Maybe a month before I was heading back to school, that’s when I found out I was pregnant,” Jones said.

“When I told my daughter’s dad about the pregnancy, he wanted me to have an abortion. He said that he couldn’t afford to feed another mouth and that I should just focus on school.”

Jones said she felt alone and ashamed, knowing she would likely be a single mom—something she had never wanted for herself after growing up in a single-parent household.

She turned to prayer, asking God for guidance. While contemplating abortion, she searched “pro-choice” on Instagram. Let Them Live was the first profile to appear.

“I sent them a DM saying I needed someone to talk to,” Jones said. By the next morning, she was connected with a pregnancy counselor.

Since then, Let Them Live has provided Jones with financial support, counseling, and a full-time job through its Mom Advocate program, which helps mothers regain stability. She has now been with the organization for five years—once a recipient, now a supporter.

Call to action

Since its founding, Let Them Live has helped over 1,000 women cancel their abortions and has raised nearly $15 million, with expectations to reach $20 million this year. On average, the organization provides about $17,000 in aid per mother.

As of the end of 2024, Let Them Live had 31,333 total donors, including 10,937 gained in that year alone.
