What’s Up Next for the Future Leaders of FAMU
By: Marissa Stubbs
Campaign season for the students at Florida A&M University has come to a close and the future leaders of the student body class are ready to strike their way to the top. Late nights and early mornings are what all the candidates for the 2019-20 scholarly school year endured.
Kyra Freeman, a third year student double majoring in biology and pre-med, was elected Miss FAMU for the 2019-20 academic school year. Freeman won by 193 votes against Taylar Hall, a third year political science scholar.
“During my reign, I would like to partner with the Counseling Center to host a series of interactive programs to help promote mental health and its effects on everyday life,” Freeman said.
Freeman expressed how one of her biggest goals to accomplish while serving as Miss FAMU is to host a scholarship luncheon with different donors to reward students for working hard. Freeman has no doubt of what she will accomplish during her reign. With a fixed mindset, she will strive to build on the legacy of those who came before her.
Every member of the royal court holds a significant role. They all have obligations to recruit prospective students and create new opportunities for current students. Some have the role of keeping the spirit alive.
The student body voted for Sidney Fleeks, a third year public relations student, as King of Orange and Green. Fleeks won in a runoff by 338 votes against Jiared Crowd, a second year health administration scholar. Fleeks holds the role of keeping the rattler spirit alive, which is what he plans to do next year.
“As the next King of Orange and Green, I want to make the Rattler pride run deep and act as the true FAMUly we say we are,” Fleeks said.
Fleeks’ main goal is to interact with students and take note of what they want to see around campus. Fleeks also wants to host events that focuses on the student body showcasing Rattler pride to its fullest.
Inside the royal court, there are many other roles to be fulfilled, such as Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior and Senior Attendant.
Claudaja Registe, a second year business administration scholar, earned the position of Junior Attendant. Registe won in a runoff by 17 votes, against Alexis Bridges, a second year healthcare administration scholar. Registe serves as a representative for the Class of 2021.
“One of my first projects that I will be doing before I officially reign is a ‘2021 ways to make Custom Spirit Wear,’ where I will be having a workshop with my class in which we make our own Rattler gear,” Registe said.
Registe envisions herself being a hardworking queen throughout the 2019-20 academic school year.
The winners of this election already have plans for the 2019-20 Royal Court. These future leaders are the next generation of the Court that will continue the FAMU legacy.
