The Legacy of Word Around Campus

Kyah Storniolo

Word Around Campus is a student-led show created three years ago by Florida A&M University alum Tristan Hutton.

Since then, it has grown into more than just a campus show; it is become a platform where student voices, creativity and experience take center stage.

From interviewing head coaches and players, reporting on games and sitting in heated sports debates, this show checks all the boxes and is a perfect outlet for students to showcase their skills and talents.

With its engaging social media presence, the show has created a space where students are not only heard but given the opportunity to develop useful media skills that they will use far after college.

At its core, Word Around Campus was built with a clear purpose.

“The whole point was to really give students an opportunity to get better at their craft and build up their portfolio while getting some real-world experience,” Hutton said. “Most students don’t get an opportunity like this, so that’s what Word Around Campus is all about.”

That mission is reflected in the environment behind the scenes, where collaboration and teamwork define each production.

“Every time we record, everybody is just so welcoming and fun, so I am glad to be a part of the team,” said social media manager Vanessa Ospin.

That sense of community is a major part of what has helped Word Around Campus grow into something bigger than any one individual. With a strong team contributing both on camera and behind the scenes, the show has built a collaborative foundation that will carry it forward.

“I know a lot of people are graduating, and there’s going to be a lot of moving pieces, so if I have to step up in a leadership position to continue this momentum, I’d be happy to,” Ospin added.

The vision for what’s ahead remains ambitious.

“The goal is to be an award-winning show and keep the momentum that we have right now,” Hutton said. “I want to be able to leave and see that it’s still going strong.”

Even as roles naturally shift over time, the focus remains on growth, consistency, and opportunity for future students.

“I just want to see Word Around Campus continue to grow and prosper under new leadership, and I’m excited for what’s to come,” Hutton said.

That forward-looking mindset defines the show’s legacy and is what makes it possible for the next group of students.

As new voices step in and others move on, Word Around Campus stands as a lasting example of what students can build together. With a strong foundation and a passionate team behind it, the show is set to continue evolving while staying true to its original purpose.
